The Curly Girl Method has been life changing for many curly girls by allowing them to embrace their natural hair and confidently rock their beautiful curls. 

This hair washing and styling routine restricts the use of heat styling, and over use of shampoo.

The first step to embarking upon curl freedom is to understand what type of curls you have




What Type of Hair Do You Have?
​Type 1: Straight Hair. This is the most resilient of hair types and is also the most oily.
Type 2: Wavy Hair. Somewhere between straight and curly hair lives wavy hair. Wavy hair is prone to more frizz and can be a bit resistant to styling. 
Type 3: Curly Hair. This type of hair is prone to frizz and is full bodied and prone to damage. Curly Hair is temperamental, especially with too much product or the wrong product used.
Type 4: Kinky Hair. This type of curly hair is tightly coiled, wiry, and delicate. Kinky hair tends to be the driest type of hair and is prone to breakage. Avoiding harsh chemicals is very important for type 4 hair.

Curly Girl Method Steps

Step 1: Shampoo. The once a week shampoo is a bit more involved than a typical shampoo routine. Saturate hair completely before massaging in your choice of curly shampoo. Focus on the scalp and allow the lather to run down the length of your hair. Repeat to ensure a clean scalp.
We recommend Redken's Acidic Bonding Curls shampoo. 

Step 2: Condition. Next, use your choice of curly conditioner and squish it into your hair as if you were trying to squeeze the conditioner into the hair follicles. Now is a good time to detangle with a wide tooth comb to remove tangles and any hair fall out. Rinse but not completely. We recommend Redken's Acidic Bonding Curls Conditioner.

Step 3: Style. Styling product is what maintains the shape of the curl and tames frizz. Use your choice of curl cream to define and hydrate your curls while acting as a leave in treatment that won't weigh down your hair. Apply your curl product and squish it into your hair like you did the conditioner. You want to lock in the moisture from the water with the product. Remember products can be layered together. We recommend Redken's Acidic Bonding Curls Leave in treatment.

Redken has a wide range of curl products to suit all hair types and textures.

Step 4: Time to Plop. Use a hair towel (some people use a t-shirt) to wrap your hair while it is still wet. It can be easier to flip your head upside down and plop your head into the towel and then wrap. This may take some practice.
An alternative to plopping would be to simply air dry, but for volume we recommend deffusing with the attachment on your hair dryer.
Using lots of curl product can create what we call a "cast", where the hair can feel scrunchy once dry. Be sure to scrunch out the cast to soften the curls once hair is 100% dry. Scrunching to early can create frizz. 

Step 5: Day 2 and Beyond. Sure, your curls look great on day 1 and 2, but what happens when you get to day 3 and 4? 
Try reactivating your curl product by simply dampening your hair with a spray bottle. This helps to refresh and reform your curls and reduce frizz until your next shampoo. Redken's Refreshing Curl Mist is great for redefining curls. 

Following the Curly Girl Method takes some commitment and also finding the right product for your hair type. It may take a bit of trial and error but after a while of sticking with it, the results are amazing and you will finally love your gorgeous naturally curly tresses.
